Serving the City Internships The Serving the City Internship program provides paid internships at NYC nonprofits. These internships are available exclusively to FCLC and FCRH students. The first Serving the City internships of the 2023-2024 academic year are now posted! Fordham is proud to be among a handful of select institutions from which The Morgan Library and Museum is recruiting students to participate in their College Ambassador program! As an ambassador, students will promote the Morgan not only as a museum and library, but also as a place for research, education and entertainment. Students will promote and spread awareness of the Morgan on their respective campuses and social media platforms. This is a paid opportunity with a stipend available, and the duration is from September 2023 to May 2024. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: communication with relevant department heads at each university, the completion of surveys related to programming, attendance at scheduled museum events, brainstorming ideas to increase attendance among college students and various social media requirements. In addition, there are two on-site requirements for each college ambassador: presence at College Night in the fall semester at the Morgan Library and Museum, and one scheduled free tour or visit for students at your institution that is tailored to students’ interests. This opportunity is open to students currently enrolled at Columbia University/Barnard, New York University, Fordham University, The Fashion Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, The City University of New York Graduate School and Princeton University Graduate School with interest in a relevant background or area of study. Happening around town Events in NYC (free or low-cost) NYC Ferry Looking for an alternative form of transportation in addition to the subways and buses? Or just interested in a low-cost river cruise? NYC ferry is a great option to take advantage of in the summer! Summer Streets 2023 Through August | Various streets within the five boroughs Summer Streets 2023 will take place on five Saturdays in five boroughs. Nearly 20 miles of streets will be car-free and open to the public. You can participate in free fitness and cultural activities along the route. Event hours will be from 7 AM to 1 PM each day. Van Gogh's Cypresses Through August 27 | The Met Museum; 1000 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10028 Van Gogh’s Cypresses is the first exhibition to focus on the trees—among the most famous in the history of art—immortalized in signature images by Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890). Some 40 works illuminate the extent of his fascination with the region’s distinctive flamelike evergreens as they successively sparked, fueled, and stoked his imagination over the course of two years in the South of France. August 14-18 | The Oculus - Westfield World Trade Center; 185 Greenwich St, New York, NY 10007 Art on the Ave NYC partnered with Westfield to present 50 Years ‘Til Infinity, a salute to Hip Hop. This exciting week-long activation takes place in Art on the Ave’s interactive space in the Oculus and features performances by DJ’s, MC’s, and dancers as well as live painting by graffiti artists who will not only create their own pieces but also a large collaborative piece for the public to contribute to. The activation is free and open to the public. [R]Evolution of Hip Hop Through August | Universal Hip Hop Museum; 610 Exterior Street Bronx, NY 10451 The [R]Evolution of Hip Hop is an immersive journey through Hip Hop History conceived by creative agents from multiple artistic backgrounds that employ archives and experimental storytelling techniques focusing on the five elements of Hip Hop: MCing, DJing, Breakdancing, Aerosol Art, Knowledge. Tickets must be reserved and are free through the month of August. REAL RAP: HIP-HOP STAR POWER ON SCREEN Through October | Museum of the Moving Image; 36-01 35 Ave, Astoria, NY 11106 This series focuses on hip-hop artists who have appeared on the big screen, featuring action-packed blockbusters, thoughtful comedies, and independent dramas from the 1990s to the 2000s—essential stories of diverse communities as performed by gifted and compelling artists on film. The Book of HOV: A celebration of the life and work of Shawn "JAY-Z" Carter Through October | Brooklyn Public Library; Central Library 10 Grand Army Plaza Brooklyn, NY 11238 Brooklyn Public Library is pleased to present The Book of HOV, an installation created by Roc Nation to celebrate the life and work of Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter.
