Dear Melinda,
This is a follow up on the recent email regarding the changes in Google storage. Clara Perdiz, Jason Benedict, and Lindsay Karp from the IT department are co-leading this project and working closely with the taskforce members to ensure a smooth transition.
Google has implemented new storage limits for educational institutions, requiring the university to place storage quotas on every account. As a result, the storage capacity for Fordham University Google accounts may be affected, significantly impacting Fordham Google Apps services including Gmail, Photos, Drive, and Docs.
The vast majority of Fordham Google accounts (90%) will not be impacted by this change as their storage usage is already below the new limits.
That said, this transition to Google’s storage quotas is a user-driven process, meaning you will need to actively manage your storage usage to stay within the designated allocations. Your cooperation and proactive engagement are crucial as we navigate these changes together.
What You Need to Do:
Check your current storage by logging into your account and visiting this Google Storage Site. We recommend checking your account periodically to ensure that your storage falls below the 10GB limit.
If you are well under the quota, please be mindful of its usage. If you are over the limit we encourage you to sign into your Fordham Google account and begin cleaning and reducing the number of files, photos and emails. This is a great opportunity to revisit your digital space, streamline and organize your digital files, and make room for what's truly important—you might even rediscover some forgotten gems!

When do the storage limits go into effect:
The quotas will be in effect starting October 30th, 2024.
What’s Next?
To ensure compliance with the new storage limits, we will be contacting Fordham community members who need to take further action to meet the new requirements throughout the summer and fall. Our goal is to provide you with the necessary support and guidance during this transition.
We will be hosting a series of town halls, zoom office hours, and webinars throughout the summer and fall to assist with these changes. These sessions will offer detailed information, answer your questions, and provide practical tips for managing your storage effectively.
Expect more information and guidance this summer, which will also be available on our webpage.
Adapting to change can sometimes be challenging, but we're committed to providing support every step of the way. Should you have any specific inquiries or require assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to our IT Service Desk via the Fordham IT Service Portal, email us at helpit@fordham.edu or call (718) 817-3999.
This initiative, coupled with practicing good digital hygiene, will help us maintain a secure and efficient digital environment, ensuring that our resources are optimally utilized for the benefit of all members of the Fordham University community.
