Dear FCLC,

I hope that you are holding up as fully as possible during this particularly challenging end-of-year. Please remember that all university services are here for you as we make our way through finals. We are living through a difficult moment, and we all need a bit of help sometimes.

For students seeking spiritual support, I could not be more pleased that Campus Ministry has recently expanded to include new Directors of Muslim and Jewish Life. Rabbi Katja Vehlow and Imam Ammar Abdul Rahman joined Fordham last week, and have already begun meeting with students, faculty, and administrators. They will be dividing their time each week between the Lincoln Center and Rose Hill campuses. I hope you will join me in welcoming them to our community!

This will be the final Dean’s Newsletter of the 2023-24 academic year. In less than a week finals will be completed and, on May 18, the class of 2024 will enjoy a well-deserved day of celebration. I look forward to seeing many of you there! Congratulations to one and all!

Wishing you a wonderful summer,
Dean Auricchio

The ancient Kabbalists believed that it was possible to find meaning in the empty spaces around and within the letters of texts. The Japanese concept of Notan views the relationship between negative and positive space as reciprocal and necessary for harmony and balance. These two worldviews deeply influence the artist’s work. Deborah Ugoretz explores these by working with cut paper and painting in acrylics. “The simplicity, flexibility, and strength of paper enable me to transform it into multidimensional art with a limitless range of expression,” she said. The exhibit is accompanied by a display of rare books from the Special Collections.

Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys
Through July 7 | Brooklyn Museum; 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, New York 11238-6052

Gordon Parks. Jean-Michel Basquiat. Lorna Simpson. Kehinde Wiley. Nina Chanel Abney. These names loom large in the past and present of art—as do many others in the collection of musical and cultural icons Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Alicia Keys. Expansive in their collecting habits, the Deans, both born and raised in New York, champion a philosophy of “artists supporting artists.” The first major exhibition of the Dean Collection, Giants showcases a focused selection from the couple’s world-class holdings. The Brooklyn Museum’s presentation spotlights works by Black diasporic artists, part of our ongoing efforts to expand the art-historical narrative. Student discounted tickets are available for purchase online.

The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism
Through July 28 | The Met Fifth Avenue; 1000 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10028

The groundbreaking exhibition The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism explores the comprehensive and far-reaching ways in which Black artists portrayed everyday modern life. Through some 160 works of painting, sculpture, photography, film, and ephemera, explore the new Black cities that took shape in the 1920s–40s in New York City’s Harlem and nationwide in the early decades of the Great Migration, when millions of African Americans began to move away from the segregated rural South. The first art museum survey of the subject in New York City since 1987, the exhibition establishes the Harlem Renaissance and its radically new development of the modern Black subject as central to the development of international modern art. New York State residents and New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut students: the amount you pay for admission is up to you, but you must pay something ($00.01 minimum per ticket).
