Editorial Reviews

Review

"There is just enough humanizing in the pictures--the intimation of a face on the tower, fog forming a grasping hand--to maintain the human spirit of the story and lead to its message: 'Each to his own place, little brother.' " --New York Herald Tribune

"Such a picture-story book as Mrs. Swift and Mr. Ward have made between them will not only be deeply enjoyed by boys and girls ... but will help to cultivate in them the seeing eye, and make them sensitive to the beauty which they can so easily find around them." --
The New York Times

A Timeless Classic
For years this was always one of my favorite stories. Just bought the book and last week went to NYC to see the lighthouse in person. A true pleasure to read and if you get a chance, a real experience to see.

When my grandaughter was born This was one of the first books I got for her. I read it as a child and then read it to my younger siblings. When my own children were little I read it to them. We have all gone to see the little red lighthouse in person. It is a wonderful story about a different time that spans til today

I purchased this book as a gift for my 8 yr old granddaughter. This version of the book uses the original watercolors done by Lynd Ward in 1942. It’s a beautiful story the author created when she saw the George Washington Bridge under construction. The bridge opened in 1932. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a great story for children.

If you aren’t sure if you should buy this or not, just do it. It’s a classic. I could just borrow at the library but this one is too good not to have around all the time. My 2 year old and four year old love it.

This was one of our favorite books to read to our children. Purchased it to read to the grandchildren. It’s part of New York State history, so great for homeschooling!

They just repainted and refurbished the real Little Red lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge (GWB)! It's a beautiful piece of history and a beautifully illustrated book.

I only gave this book four stars because it is a little old fashioned with the illustrations and the amount of text, but it is a good, solid children's book. The general meaning is that everyone has a place and can be important when the time comes.
It's a little long and wordy to read to a very young child, but it would be very appropriate for older children and those who have just started to read. It has a great message.

J'avais entendu Robert Kramer en parler dans son film Route One. Mon petit-fils adore l'histoire du petit phare rouge au pied du grand pont gris.
