Stargate Theatre Internship

This paid internship is funded by the Serving the City Internships program and is only available to students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill.

Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to producing innovative theatre of the highest quality by American and international playwrights, with a focus on presenting New York, American, and world premieres, invites Fordham University students to apply for the Summer 2023 internship in Stargate Theatre. For 50 years, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by contemporary American and international playwrights. MTC is an anti-racist organization that respects and honors all voices, and upholds the values of community and equity.

Stargate Theatre is MTC Education’s ‘theatre company within a theatre company.’ Each summer, Stargate hires a group of 17-26 year olds who have been involved with the justice system, or are vulnerable to involvement, to create and perform an original play off-Broadway. Over the course of two months, the individuals become an ensemble pursuing a common goal: creating a theatre piece that challenges its audience to see the company members in a new light.

The Stargate Theatre Intern gains the unique opportunity to work at the intersection of theatremaking and social justice. The intern will assist the artistic and administrative leadership team in all aspects of participant progress tracking and rehearsal room operations. By the end of the internship, the intern will experience from start to finish how an educational production is created and gain knowledge about how the arts can be used as a catalyst for social change.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This intern will:
  • Function as an assistant in the rehearsal room, predominantly supporting the stage manager, but also providing support to the artistic team and company managers
  • Maintain an organized record of participant writing using Basecamp cloud-based project management software and Google Drive
  • Administer surveys to program participants and record data to track progress
  • Serve as a run crew member during technical rehearsals and performances

QUALIFICATIONS

An applicant for this position should:

  • Be interested in both theatre and social justice
  • Have experience in theatrical production (preferably stage management) or managing events
  • Be self-starting, highly collaborative, and detail-oriented
  • Feel comfortable communicating in a socially conscious manner with a variety of individuals who come to the project from a number of different backgrounds

This internship is a late afternoon to mid-evening commitment, typically beginning around 3pm and concluding between 8-9pm.

The deadline for application is March 30, 2023. A complete application consists of:

  • A professional work résumé that may include: education and training, work history, relevant theatre/arts experience, and computer skills
  • A personal statement responding to:

Our mission at MTC is to produce innovative theatre of the highest quality by American and International playwrights, with a focus on presenting New York, American, and world premieres.
