Tips for Recent Arrivals to NYC
In the last eighteen months, more than a hundred thousand refugees have sought asylum in our city. Since our city government's resources are overwhelmed, we've decided to put together a guide to NYC by compiling a list of tips from the experts on inexpensive living in the city — college students. Whether you have lived in New York City for many years or have recently arrived in the last x months, whether you're a cost-cutting pro or a member of a charitable organization looking to help migrants, we welcome your insight! The categories of tips we will be featuring is listed below. Fill in as many as you want (no need for full sentences, bullet point lists are fine). Thank you for taking the time to complete this! What public spaces (areas that are either publically or privately-owned, but open for access to the general public) do you enjoy around the city? Where do you go when you aren't home but need to kill time / charge your phone / stay warm or cool, depending on the weather? Are you aware of any conveniently-located public restrooms? Think along the lines of parks, cafes, plazas — places where you can sit without having to pay, or paying a minimal amount (e.g. for a coffee at a cafe).
How do you find affordable food in NYC? (What are your favorite supermarket deals, inexpensive restaurants, etc.)
Where do you find inexpensive essentials in NYC? (Affordable stores and deals on clothing, toiletries, etc.)
Do you belong to any community that welcomes / helps migrants? (E.g. faith-based institutions, English language programs, etc.) Additionally, are you aware of any city programs that offer aid either generally or specifically to migrants?
Do you have any tips on how to find affordable housing in NYC?
Is there any other New Yorker insight you'd like to submit for migrants recently arrived to the U.S.?
