Start Lighthouse was born during the pandemic to address widespread learning loss. During a time of shuttered libraries and schools, families needed at-home materials to address threatened academic achievement. That’s why Start Lighthouse placed the power of reading in the hands of parents and their children by building home libraries. Since 2020, Start Lighthouse has delivered over 21,000+ brand-new multicultural books to over 5,000 students in the Bronx.

This year, we have launched Literary Adventures — in-person interactive workshops led by nationally recognized and award-winning BIPOC authors and illustrators. Offered at Title I schools, the mission of the Literary Adventure is to engage and personalize students’ relationship with books. By meeting authors and illustrators, students experience reading in a uniquely personalized way and its impact is far-reaching. Students become consumers of books and understand the process of writing and illustrating a story. Students then actively engage in their own selection of books through our onsite bookshop, which provides them with an array of free, inclusive, engaging, and bilingual titles to build their home libraries.

The Summer Programming Intern will work closely with Start Lighthouse’s executive leadership team to ensure all programming activities are planned, organized, and executed with high quality. They will be involved in researching exciting new talent, publishers, and artists to be highlighted in Literary Adventure programming.
