This paid internship is funded by the Serving the City program and is only available to students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill.

The Bronx County Historical Society (BCHS), founded in 1955, is a non-profit educational and cultural institution chartered by the New York State Board of Regents. BCHS, the historical agency for The Bronx is dedicated to the collection, preservation, documentation, and public interpretation of the history of The Bronx and lower Westchester County from its earliest human habitation by indigenous Americans through the present. BCHS disseminates information to the general public, schools, students, historians, community members, activists, urban planners, and staff of other museums and libraries on the historical, social, and economic development of The Bronx. It utilizes its collections in exhibits, both in-house and traveling, historical research, oral history projects, production of publications, and educational and cultural programming.
 
The Archival Assistant Intern will assist the Bronx County Archives in archival processing by sorting, organizing, cataloging and indexing special archival collections, assist in curating special collections, scan and digitize documents and photographs. Assist the Research Library in cataloging books, references, and photographs, re-shelving books and other reference materials into the library stacks (shelving). Oral History Interviewing - setting up digital cameras and recording area for interviewing.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
This intern will be:
●     assisting in organizing and arranging archival documents, collections, and other materials in alphabetical, chronological, and other appropriate order.
●     assisting in performing routine procedures to arrange for the preservation, digitization, and scanning of archival documents.
●     assisting in labeling archival folders and containers.
●     assisting in preparing oral history equipment and interviews.
●     assisting in electronic transcribing and indexing of interviews.
●     performing clerical functions incidental to archives and library activities.
●     assisting in cataloging and restacking library books, periodicals, and references.
●     assisting with light-grounds-keeping and area beautification.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
An applicant for this position should have interest and/or background in]:
●     history, community engagement, library sciences, and/or museums and cultural institutions.
●     Multilingualism is a plus.
