Summer Oral History Intern

This paid internship is funded by the Serving the City program and is only available to students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill.

Museum Programs, Collections
30hrs/week (flexible) to total 200hrs
Hybrid is strongly preferred, this may be 3 days/week in the office depending on hours. This is a paid internship through Fordham, and the candidate will receive a stipend of $3000 for the internship.
Start Date: July 5th, 2023
End Date: week of August 14th, depending on hrs/week
 
The 9/11 Memorial is located at the site of the former World Trade Center complex in lower Manhattan, and occupies approximately half of the 16-acre site. The 9/11 Memorial features two enormous waterfalls and reflecting pools, each about an acre in size, set within the footprints of the Twin Towers.
 
The National September 11 Memorial Museum is the country’s principal institution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring 9/11’s continuing significance. Located at the bedrock/foundation level of the Twin Towers, the Museum is a moving tribute to the events of September 11th.
 
The position will provide the opportunity to develop practical skills in a museum environment, will introduce the student to a diversity of museum professionals and practices, and will enable the Intern to interact with museum collections curators and oral historians on all aspects of their work, including research, writing, outreach, and administration.
 
The intern’s primary focus will be helping to organize and prepare the oral history collection for public access and research, in support of a multi-year and multi-faceted endeavor involving research, writing, and summarizing and transcribing oral histories. The intern will also assist with research into gifts offered to the collection by individuals who have recorded oral histories and preparing preliminary formal written acquisition rationales. There may be opportunities to edit audio files and assist in outreach and recording. There may be additional research opportunities.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Intern will work closely on the following projects:
 
·       Drafting full or partial transcripts of oral history recordings.
·       Drafting accurate summaries or digests of recorded interview content, noting specific words, phrases, and sentences of particular resonance and those related to historical themes, as set forth by the supervisor.
·       Assisting with record keeping, tracking, and cataloguing.
·       Conducting research involving oral history candidates and artifacts offered to the collection.

 
QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements Are:
•          Student with commitment to history, public history, oral history, American studies, museum studies, material culture, memory and trauma, or related fields of study. Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student
•          Excellent written and oral communication skills.
•          Demonstrated research skills and organizational skills.
•          Excellent listening and writing skills, particularly the ability to synthesize and summarize accurately.
•          Excellent computer skills and willingness to learn new programs, including in-house database and audio editing programs.
•          Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
•          Ability to work with difficult content, often of an emotional or graphic nature.
•          Willingness to engage with material relating to September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993.
•          Available to work to program time commitment requirements
•          Ability to work hybrid based in our 200 Liberty St offices
•          Effective April 30, 2022, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum (9/11 Memorial & Museum) requires all eligible employees be fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 as a condition of employment and provide proof of such vaccination prior to their joining the institution
•          Familiarity with relevant computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite.
