Intern - Department of Visitor Experience

Internship opportunity with the Brooklyn Museum

This paid internship is funded by the Serving the City Internships program and is only available to students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill.

The Brooklyn Museum is one of the largest and oldest art museums in the United States, with roots extending back to 1823. Our collections include a wide range of objects, from ancient Egyptian masterpieces to contemporary art, representing almost every culture in the world. The Department of Visitor Experience and Engagement (VEE) intern will support VEE staff in preparations for Summer and Fall 2023 group tours for adult audiences. Their work will focus on the special exhibition Africa Fashion⁠ (on tour from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London) and a soon-to-be-announced special exhibition related to American filmmaking and Black histories.
 
This internship runs from May 30 to August 4, 2023 and will be primarily on-site for a total of 15 to 20 hours per week. Attendance at weekly activities for all BkM Summer 2023 interns, held onsite every Tuesday, will be required. The rest of the intern’s schedule will be determined in cooperation with the intern’s supervisor in the VEE department. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES

This intern will be:
  • Organizing research resources for the Museum’s freelance gallery guides to use in preparing gallery tours
  • Creating exhibition-related training materials for BkM admissions staff
  • Assisting VEE staff in implementing specific tours and training sessions related to these exhibitions
  • Attending weekly VEE departmental meetings and Museum-wide intern activities
  • Supporting VEE staff in greeting visitors on First Saturdays 
 
QUALIFICATIONS

An applicant for this position should be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and possess the following background and skills: 
  • All majors are invited to attend; coursework in art history, fashion history, African studies, or African American studies is especially welcome
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Organizational abilities and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, Google Meet, and Zoom
  • An interest in contemporary art and culture
  • An interest in museums’ internal processes
