Education and Social Services Intern

Bronx Lacrosse is on a mission to improve educational and life opportunities for underserved students in the South Bronx through the sport of lacrosse. We use lacrosse to build community, invest students in school, and improve academics. Our approach combines intensive academic and athletic services with mentoring, team-building experiences, and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) opportunities to position our student-athletes for success in school, in life, and when applying to competitive high schools and colleges.

 

Bronx Lacrosse is looking for an Education and Social Services intern who is passionate about non-profit work in the education sector, social justice, and serving youth in underserved communities. This internship will allow students personal experience working with nonprofit management and leadership, with direct access to people running the show. Half of the time will be spent interacting with students, the other half will be spent working with nonprofit leaders to shape the trajectory of educational programming. Hours are flexible but at least half are required to be in person from approximately 3-6pm Mondays through Thursdays.



RESPONSIBILITIES

This intern will:

  • Work side by side with the Director of Academics to review Algebra Readiness Tutoring Program and complete administrative tasks related to the material
  • Support nonprofit impact-evaluation and data analysis projects 
  • Contribute to the revision of curricular materials 
  • Provide individual or small group math tutoring to middle school student-athletes
  • Explain concepts, review content, guide practice, and check completed work
  • Participate in occasional professional development sessions to improve tutoring practices and review student data
  • Build relationships and community within small groups
  • Support special projects that address the nonprofit’s goal, which could include social media campaigns, administrative support with fundraising events, and other opportunities as they align with the intern’s skills and interests 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

An applicant for this position should have:

  • A belief that every student has the desire and the ability to succeed
  • A commitment to education equity and social justice 
  • An interest in mentorship with kids in underserved communities
  • Strong academic record
  • Growth mindset and desire for feedback
  • Prior tutoring experience a plus
  • Spanish speaking a plus
