Fall Theatre Education Intern

Internship opportunity with The 52nd Street Project

This paid internship is funded by the Serving the City Internships program and is available only to students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill who will be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship. Students enrolled in other schools at Fordham or who will graduate or transfer before the internship end date are not eligible.

Looking for candidates available either (or both) Tuesdays 3-5:30pm or Wednesdays 3:30 to 6pm! Intern will work as Playmaking or Songmaking teaching assistant during these times.

Internship Description:
Interns at the The 52nd Street Project assist in all aspects of theater production, classes and administration, as well as participating in the education programming. These positions are extremely hands-on. The interns will work closely with the staff, with children in classes and rehearsals, as well as with a number of professional actors, directors, and stage managers from the New York Theater community.

The internship offers an opportunity to: 
  • Learn about non-profit theater and help out backstage with professional productions of young peoples plays;
  • Experience first-hand the day to day activities of a successful and established non-profit arts organization;
  • Work closely with elementary, middle, and high-school age students from the NYC public school system in a variety of after school arts programming;
  • Learn about after-school education and the administration of a mentoring program;
  • Join a fun and creative community of working actors, directors, and designers in New York City.

Intern candidates should have:
  • Good organizational skills;
  • Some office experience;
  • Interest in applied theater, community engagement, education.
  • Interest and experience working with youth!


Responsibilities include:
  • Working with the Associate Artistic Director in playwriting and acting workshops by assisting young people in the classes;
  • Assisting the Director of Design & Production in all areas of production;
  • Assisting the Education Director with administration and working directly with children in our after-school homework help program;
  • Participating on weekend writing retreats where the artists and young people collaborate – duties on these retreats range from running lines with actors to chopping onions for dinner to hanging with the young people at the beach or at the bowling alley, etc.;
  • Interns may have the chance to work on productions as technical assistants, backstage crew members, or actors in small supporting roles. However, Interns do not direct, write, or perform main roles in our shows.
  • Assisting the Executive Director, the Education Director, and the Development Director with administrative duties such as mailings, fundraising, marketing, and general office tasks.

The internship requires a minimum of 6 (can be up to 6-12) hours per week time commitment during regular programming weeks. During production weeks and writing retreats, those call times and work hours take priority over an interns usual weekly work schedule. For instance, during weeks when interns are needed mainly at night for tech and dress rehearsals, we may suggest they cancel their usual work hours so that they can keep up on school work and other commitments.
