Outreach Assistant

Safety Protocol:  Use Lysol wipes to clean office space, wash hands regularly (use hand sanitizer) and mask wearing optional. Stay home if sick.

 

Salary/Range:

Stipend provided by Servicing the City. This paid internship is funded by the Serving the City Internships program and is available only to students at Fordham College at Lincoln Center and Fordham College at Rose Hill who will be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship. Students enrolled in other schools at Fordham or who will graduate or transfer before the internship end date are not eligible.

 

About us:  West Harlem Group Assistance, Inc., & Affiliates (WHGA) are non-profit organizations with a mission to develop affordable housing and provide social services in Central Harlem. Convent Avenue Family Living Center, Oberia Dempsey Multi-Service Center, West Harlem Residence, Supportive Housing Programs for Mental Health, Housing for seniors, Healthy Food Program are some of our services in Central Harlem.

 

Job Summary/Objective:

Under the supervision of the Community for Healthy Food Outreach Coordinator, the chosen Outreach Assistant will assist with our programs mission to incorporate healthy food access, programming, education and outreach into affordable housing developments and existing community services for residents. The Outreach Assistant will work with our Community for Healthy Food Outreach Coordinator to educate residents about nutrition, food preparation, community based healthy food resources and overall health.

 

Essential Functions:

This position is in-person. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions in a hybrid manner.

  • Assists with maintaining records, logs, binders, data entry, and telephones for the program.
  • Assist with setting up and coordinating partnership and outreach meetings and conferences.
  • Represent our program and participates in marketing events (outreach events, tabling, meetings, trainings, etc.).
  • Responsible for Pantry intake via plentiful pantry management software
  • Compiles, transcribes and distributes minutes of meetings.
  • Work with neighborhood residents and fellow community organizations to raise awareness about nutrition, food preparation, community based healthy food resources and overall health.
  • Assist our program with information gathering, data collection and entry, grant reporting requirements, and writing for program planning to grow our reach.
  • Assists with recruiting families for cooking classes, workshops and all other events coordinated and hosted by the program.
  • Assists WHGA’s Food Access and Outreach Coordinator with documenting all media coverage for events.

Preferred Competencies and Experience:

  • Customer/Client service experience.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.
  • Experience working in a low-income, community-based setting.
  • Experience in outreach or community engagement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates interest in, and knowledge of, food issues as related to healthy living and low-income communities.
  • Self-directed and can take initiative. 

 

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Work is also performed outside of the office with regular exposer to inclement weather, noise, etc. outside in the community doing outreach and other related job assignments. Candidate must be willing and able to assist with deliveries and pantry distribution if needed.

 

Travel Required:

Travel is primarily local during the business day.
