Dear University Community:

I am writing to provide an update on the status of Fordham’s study abroad programs scheduled for this summer. In the interest of the health and safety of our students, Fordham has made the difficult decision to continue the current suspension of all study abroad programs through the end of summer 2021.  I am hopeful that, as mass vaccination programs roll out globally, the pandemic will pose less of a threat in the 2021-2022 academic year so that we can lift the suspension and confidently offer study abroad opportunities for our students.
Fordham students have applied to a broad range of study abroad programs in 21 countries around the world this summer.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) level-3 advisory regarding international travel remains in effect. The CDC has cited the formidable challenges and unpredictable circumstances that would be associated with facilitating study abroad programs at this stage of the pandemic as virulent strains of the virus responsible for COVID-19 are emerging globally.
Consequently, Fordham undergraduate students will not be able to study abroad this summer in Fordham-sponsored programs or in programs sponsored by other organizations with start dates before August 15th. The staff in the International and Study Abroad Programs Office are committed to work with every affected student and support them as they adjust their academic plans. Impacted students will be able to register for Fordham summer courses and have the option to reside on campus for Summer Sessions in 2021.
Although sponsored international travel won’t be possible this summer we are again offering a number of opportunities to support virtual global learning and intercultural engagement. The faculty who normally teach at Fordham London or in Granada, Spain will be offering some of their most popular courses virtually this summer. Any Fordham student will have the opportunity to engage with British and Spanish culture through taking online courses taught by Fordham’s faculty in London and Spain.
In addition, Fordham’s London Internship Program placements will proceed virtually for those who would like to have the experience of interning with a UK-based company, and virtual internship opportunities will be available this summer with companies and organizations based in  Argentina, Australia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.
All students who were scheduled to study abroad during summer 2021 will have the option to:
  • Defer with priority placement to the same program in summer 2022 without reapplying or paying another application fee.
  • Withdraw their application for a full refund of the application fee paid to Fordham.
  • Defer their application to another semester
I deeply regret that the global pandemic has disrupted our ability to facilitate transformative study abroad programs for Fordham students this summer. Please know that Fordham remains hopeful that, subject to the course of the global pandemic and the rollout of mass vaccination programs, we will be able to lift the suspension of study abroad in time for fall 2021.
